Nestled just beneath Croix de Fer Pass in the upper portion of
the Maurienne Valley, St. Sorlin D'Arves in
August is much more than a ski resort gone to sleep for the summer. Easy access
to great hiking, quaint Savoyard villages, marmots and spectacular views—all
beneath the gaze of a giant cat made of rock—make a snow-free visit to this
Alpine resort worth the trip.

Cyclosportif report: Les Boucles du Verdon, May 2011
By Baron von Rupp on Monday 18 July 2011, 14:57 - Cycling

All new: more pain, more glory, more magnificence!! Under the new and very
effective management of the ATTC 04 (L'Association du Tour
des Communautés de Communes des Alpes de Haute Provence), Les Boucles du
Verdon is ready for a more prominent role on the late-spring
cyclosportif calendar.

Cyclosportif report: La Louis Pasteur, 22 August 2010
By Baron von Rupp on Saturday 28 August 2010, 15:01 - Cycling
The starting
line for the Louis Pasteur in Dôle.
Summer weekends have been pretty busy and thus
cyclosportif opportunities quite rare, so when Sunday
22 August opened up I found the nearest one and went for it...with questionable
results.

Ode to August 15th (in France, anyway)
By Baron von Rupp on Monday 16 August 2010, 18:05 - Living in France (general)
In fact,
let's make it an ode to the entire month of August which, from the
getting-things-done angle, might as well not exist here. For most people,
August is a time to be Somewhere Else doing anything besides work; for those of
us employed by evil foreign companies that don't offer unending weeks of paid
vacation to their employees it's more like a month in a gloriously quiet city,
a ride through the trough of a sine wave that bottoms out on the fifteenth
before slowly climbing back up to normal urban life in September.

The Tour de France, French-style
By Baron von Rupp on Saturday 24 July 2010, 15:04 - Cycling

The Tour de France is quite a spectacle, whether or not you
enjoy watching professional cycling; however, you can't really understand why
it's such a big deal until you watch it on French television.

Cyclosportif report: Les Boucles du Verdon, 30 May 2010
By Baron von Rupp on Monday 31 May 2010, 15:42 - Cycling

Despite howling winds and some, oh let's call them operational curiosities, the
2010 edition of this cyclosportif provençal was
everything 160 kilometers of cycling in the mountains should be.

Say it ain't so, Floyd: an open letter to Floyd Landis
By Baron von Rupp on Thursday 20 May 2010, 16:03 - Cycling
Today Floyd Landis has finally topped himself, bringing his dog and pony show full circle with a last-ditch, eleventh-hour, you're-all-going-down-with-me (please add any other cliches you can think of) round of accusatory emails aiming to bring down many of his former bosses and teammates. Given his demonstrated capacity for revenge by any means available, I hope he never reads the following letter.

Cycling in France
By Baron von Rupp on Wednesday 31 March 2010, 16:27 - Cycling
Everyone knows that professional
cycling is a big deal in France. What is less commonly known—at least
outside of cycling circles—is how wonderful of a place France is to ride a
bicycle. Any bicycle: road, mountain, hybrid, cruiser, motor-assisted...they
all have a respected place in society, be it as a means of transportation,
exercise, competition or
museum piece. As an American cyclist, this all came as a
wonderful shock to me: read on to learn all the ways that cycling in
France is better than in the United States.
